Sign bill to restore Voting Rights Act if you want to honor Lewis: Clyburn

James Clyburn, the House Majority Whip said that President Trump and Senate Republicans must sign a bill to restore the Voting Rights Act in case they wish to honor the life of Civil Rights era legend Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), who died last week. Mr. Clyburn said that while words may be powerful, ’deeds are lasting’ and said that the Act should be named ’John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act of 2020’.

Some important points about the pros and cons of this bill/act Pros Strict voter registration requirements, polling place confusion and other obstacles faced by Georgia voters in 2018 show why federal oversight of elections is still needed in places with a history of discrimination, supporters said. Cons The White House, however, opposes the bill, calling it an example of federal overreach. The Democratic-backed measure would give the federal government “too much authority over an even greater number of voting practices and decisions made by states and local governments without justifying the current needs for such policies,″ the White House said in a statement. Of course, there might be many, many more. Looking forward to a fruitful discussion on this. :)
