Well. I did some research. Harriet Tubman was a pretty exceptional individual. Did she shuttle hundreds or thousands of slaves to freedom? No. No she didn't. By her own accounts she says it was closer to 50, but is that why she was admired even by her contemporaries? No. It wasn't. She was admired for going back into the jaws of the beast up to a dozen times risking her own life to free others. Almost all were indeed her family, but she also led military missions as a guide to free slaves and run risky night missions with the union army. We can look at the lives of these people and know they were human and therefore flawed, but we can admire these great qualities that they had for their own merits. Harriet Tubman was a hero in her time (which is rare) and deservedly so. She was a symbol for equal treatment under the law and for the abolition of slavery in the United States. I can't imagine a great reason why she should be talked about disparagingly.
