Iraqi PM Mustafa al-Kadhimi arrives in Iran in first trip abroad

Iraqi PM Mustafa al-Kadhimi travelled to Iran on Tuesday, where he is expected to meet Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Iraqi premier faces a tough balancing act between Iran and the US who have come close to open conflict in the region. At home, Kadhimi is coming under increasing pressure from Iran-aligned parties and paramilitary groups who perceive him as siding with the US.

He will have a difficult time dealing with both the US and Iran, considering the killing of Soleimani recently. Iraq is anyways in a state of perpetual turmoil, and the Middle East isn't in great shape, either. Whether or not he'll be able to handle Iraq amidst this quagmire remains to be seen.
