United Airlines posts $1.6 billion loss in virus-scarred second quarter

United Airlines on Tuesday said it lost $1.63bn during the second quarter as revenue plunged $1.48bn, or 87%, driven by a plunge in air travel demand because of the pandemic. During the same quarter last year it posted a $1.05bn profit. The airline lost $40mn a day from April through June but said it will trim losses to $25mn a day in the third quarter by slashing costs.
