Michigan Governor calls on President Trump to issue nationwide mask mandate

Gretchen Whitmer, the Governor of Michigan, has urged people across the country to wear masks in order to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus. She also urged President Donald Trump to issue a nationwide mask mandate. The Governor said that wearing a mask is not a political statement and that the President has begun to understand that.

The President doesn't have the constitutional authority to require a mask. The only other option for authority is a legislative/statutory authority. 6 weeks ago, some of the same governors stated that the President didn't have the authority to force them to open their states. If there's no authority 6weeks ago, there isn't authority today. The state government DOES have authority under state constitution and state law to require masks and other restrictions. In many ways, these governors who have the authority today, want to have the Federal government mandate so they can blame the federal government for any blowback.
