Canadian court rules asylum pact with US invalid, cites detention risk

A Canadian federal court Wednesday ruled invalid a bilateral pact that compels asylum seekers trying to enter Canada via the American border to first seek sanctuary in the US, due to the chance that the US will imprison the migrants. The court declared the Safe Third Country Agreement unconstitutional, and has given the federal government six months to respond.
