Behrouz Boochani: Refugee detained by Australia granted asylum in NZ

Behrouz Boochani, the Kurdish Iranian exile and journalist who was detained by Australia for six years has been granted asylum in New Zealand. Boochani was held in Manus Island detention centre after he sought asylum in Australia in 2013, arriving by boat. While in detention, he campaigned for the rights of those detained. In 2019, he fled Australia’s detention and has lived in Christchurch since.
