US Department of Energy unveils roadmap for a national quantum internet

The US Department of Energy has unveiled a plan for a national quantum internet that would run parallel with the current internet infrastructure. The main push behind the quantum network appears to be security as it has been deemed ’virtually unhackable’. It would likely be used for sensitive government data and financial transactions.

I was wondering how far away this was. A transmission by quantum entagled particles, would not have a medium from which messages and other data couldn't be intrecepted from. Meaning that the only vulnerability are the machines themselves. Quick example: Imagine you're talking on a phone with someone who possess a phone that is quantum entagled with yours. The government wouldn't be able to listen on your phone call. Not unless they physical got a hold of your phone and bugged it manually.
