China orders closure of US consulate in Chengdu

China has ordered the closure of the US consulate in the south-western city of Chengdu. It said the decision was a ’legitimate and necessary response to the unreasonable actions of the United States,’ an apparent reference to the US shutting down China’s Houston consulate this week. Chengdu is one of five US consulates in mainland China.

This move is not the least bit surprising. A tit for tat was expected and most certainly calculated by strategists. We should expect different actions to continue and tensions increasingly rising. This will go on for years if not decades until each side comes to mutually acceptable terms and agreements on the numerous key issues. In the near term it is unlikely that either side will back down. Most likely other global players will slowly but surely become more and more involved, drawing clearer lines on their positions. Let us only hope that at worse while these global shifts occur, a major miscalculation by either side does not happen and it goes the way of the Cold War between the West and the former Soviet Union, never becoming kinetic between the major powers.
