Players of two WNBA teams walk off court as the national anthem was playing

Two WNBA teams walked out of the court when the national anthem was playing as an act of solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. Through a series of coordinated actions, the organizers hope ’to be a driving force of necessary and continuing conversations about race, voting rights, LGBTQ+ advocacy, and gun control amongst other important societal issues,’ according to a WNBA statement.

I really don't understand refusing to be present or to stand for the anthem. What does it have to do with perceived police brutality or perceived racism? Our anthem stands for overcoming odds, perseverance, and something much greater than an individual. America as a whole and even the idea of America or what this country represents does not deserve to have backs turned on it. What measurement of change will people use to determine they are no longer ashamed of the country that's given you the right to turn your back to a tradition used to honor it?
