Almost 3 billion animals affected by Australian bushfires

Australia’s devastating bushfires of the past year killed or displaced nearly three billion animals. The WWF calls this one of ’worst wildlife disasters in modern history’. Almost all on the list (mammals, reptiles, birds and frogs) lost at least 30% of their habitat in temperate forests and grasslands of Australia’s south and east. The government pledged A$50m to wildlife and habitat recovery.

Bloody sad. Even with robust habitat recovery it’s going to be many many years to replace a 30% habitat lose.

These fires were started intentionally by arsonists. Nearly every Australian bush fire is due to arson, but in previous years it was often accidental. The media try to make it sound like the fires this year were caused by spontaneous combustion.
