12,000 troops to be withdrawn from Germany, says US

Mark Esper, the Defense Secretary announced that the US would withdraw 12,000 troops from Germany and would shift them to other NATO countries in Europe. The move is expected to see a reduction in the number of troops in Germany from 36,000 to 24,000. This would further give the US flexibility in deploying troops elsewhere and enhancing ’deterrence of Russia’, Mr. Esper said.

Some background: Post WW 2, a number of US forces were stationed in Germany. Although the military presence has decreased over the years, it is still a part of the US defense strategy in Europe. The US European Command (EUCOM) headquartered in the city of Stuttgart, is aimed at protecting and defending the US by deterring conflict, supporting partnerships such as NATO and countering transnational threats.
