Thousands rally in Belarus capital Minsk despite crackdown

Aleksandr Lukashenko is running for a sixth term as President of Belarus. Several of his political rivals have been disqualified from standing and the wife of one of those disqualified candidates, Svetlana Tikhanovskya, has emerged as Lukashenko’s strongest challenger. She and the opposition held a large rally in the capital Minsk on July 30th.

"Ms Tikhanovskaya, a political novice, decided to stand for election after her husband was barred from running and jailed earlier this year." She could play the emotional card really well here. And if the current ruler is as authoritarian as the BBC article says he is, then this lady might just win by a landslide. In a free and fair election, that is.
