Iraq PM calls for early election

Iraq’s PM Mustafa al-Kadhimi called an early general election for June 6, 2021, roughly a year ahead of when it would normally be held. Early elections are a key demand of Iraqi anti-government protesters who staged months of mass demonstrations last year. Iraq’s parliament is required to ratify the election date. Activists have demanded fairer elections and changes to Iraq’s voting process.

"Elections in Iraq are sometimes marred by violence and often by fraud. Early elections are a key demand of anti-government protesters who staged months of mass demonstrations last year and were killed in their hundreds by security forces and gunmen suspected of links to armed groups." In a region marred by sectarian interests, if the governments do not listen to their publics, it might invariably push people to pick up arms and align with extremist groups. We have already seen the kind of devastation caused by ISIS, and Iraq has been at the receiving end of much of that destruction. Still, despite all this, if governments dont really listen to people, it can, at best be described as unfortunate, and at worst, as these people willfully pushing the region towards instability.
