A tragedy. Alcohol was a huge factor in the emotional abuse in my marriage. My husband now can't believe the man he was for decades. He used alcohol excessively as a crutch for work stress as he climbed the corporate ladder. Neither one of us realized how bad it had gotten. By staying, I allowed the behavior. However, he wanted to change when I told him I was leaving because I had emotionally checked out of the marriage after years of therapy (he wouldn't go). I was very unhappy and I started hating him and the way he treated me and others who dare question him. I have 3 friends who are trying to decide whether to leave their emotionally abusive husbands, the latter who also drink excessively. I'm sure this is not a gender-specific problem. I do believe alcohol abuse is rampant due to the glorification of it in movies, ads, etc. Nothing or no one makes someone abuse another. Alcohol does influence thoughts and behavior, though, and, I think it's harder on a person as they age. Someone enlightened me about the word "spirits" when referring to hard alcohol, and it has disturbed me since. Things are looking up for me, but it's been a long road.
