New Canada guideline says obesity not defined by weight

A new clinical guideline in Canada says that obesity should not be defined by the weight of a person but should rather be defined by the health of a person. Doctors have been told to go beyond simply recommending a new diet and exercise to their patients. Doctors have been told to focus on the root cause of the problem instead.

But instead of simply advising patients to "eat less, move more", the guideline encourages doctors to provide supports along the lines of psychological therapy, medication and bariatric surgery like gastric-bypass surgery. This is extremely essential. Telling someone they are fat can have unintended psychological consequences, and doctors need to keep this in mind, too. Also, the covid related lockdowns imposed in many parts of the world might further alleviate mental health issues, and binge eating is sometimes a direct by-product of such issues, contributing further to obesity. Good move, Canada!
