Beirut explosion reportedly caused by fertilizer seized from Russian businessman

The 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate believed to have caused the blast in Beirut had been confiscated in 2014 from a ship owned by a Russian businessman. The ship, heading from Georgia to Mozambique, had experienced a malfunction and was diverted to Beirut for what was meant to be a short stop over. Instead, it was held by port authorities over irregularities, and the owner was forced to abandon it.
