Government and state media officials to be labeled by Twitter

Twitter announced on Thursday that it is introducing new labels to better identify accounts which belong to government officials and senior staff of state backed media. The label will be given to key government officials like foreign ministers, ambassadors, and official spokespeople. The label is set to appear as part of the account’s bio, and will also be attached to the username.

So the staff at BBC, PBS, RT, etc. will all be labeled?

"Unlike independent media, state-affiliated media frequently use their news coverage as a means to advance a political agenda," the platform said. Yea, I am gonna call bs on that reasoning.

I read about this in the tech news earlier, seems like a good idea. It's gonna save loads of time trying to identify the source of a claim. I couldn't count the number of times I've seen russian officials sharing fake news on Twitter, they've been really effective... https://www.theregister.com/2020/08/06/china_russia_disinformation_black_hat/

This actually sounds like a good idea as a way to avoid fake accounts trying to pretend to be someone else.

VOA better have it or Twitter may be violating the spirit of the law. It is generally illegal to direvt US propaganda from VOA and others in such a way that it gets to Americans.
