Mauritius races to contain oil spill, protect coastline

Thousands of students, environmentalists and residents of Mauritius are scrambling to create cordons to keep leaking oil from a tanker away from the island. An estimated 1 ton of oil from the Japanese ship’s cargo of 4 tons has already escaped into the sea. Workers were seeking to stop more oil from leaking, but with high winds and rough seas there were reports of new cracks to the ship’s hull.

Just like gun control in the US, the global oil industry has PR firms that scurry around after events like this to clean up public opinion. No, the oil spill can wait, but public opinion needs to be shaped. There are alternate power sources that are ready to go and don’t create these environmental disasters. Why don’t we implement them instead of coal and oil? MONEY speaks volumes. So, think Greta Thunberg has disappeared? Nope, she’s just not getting as much coverage, since she doesn’t play the PR games the oil industry does.
