Highest death tally in 150 years in first half of 2020 recorded in Sweden

Sweden recorded its highest death toll in 150 years in the first six months of 2020. The country’s official statistics office pinned the blame for the alarming number of deaths on the novel coronavirus disease. The nation had refused to implement a COVID-19 lockdown, and has witnessed 51,405 fatalities between January and June. This is the highest since 1869, when 55,431 died due to a famine.
