John Thompson dies at 78; was the first black coach to win NCAA basketball title

John Thompson, the first black coach to lead a team to the NCAA men’s basketball championship, has died at the age of 78. One of the most celebrated figures in basketball, Thompson took over a waning Georgetown program in the 1970s and shaped it in his exclusive style into a persistent contender, finishing with a national championship team led by center Patrick Ewing in 1984.
