Pakistani man sentenced to death for ’blasphemous texts’

A court in Lahore, Pakistan, has sentenced a Christian man to death for having committed ’blasphemy’. Asif Pervaiz, 37, has been in custody since 2013, accused of allegedly having sent ’blasphemous’ text messages to a former supervisor at work. Human rights groups have called out Pakistan’s strict blasphemy laws, stressing that they are often used to persecute minorities.

Despicable. In many ways, people in power in Pakistan (and elsewhere too) use religion as a tool to curry votes from the fanatics. Unfortunately, it works. Even in India, where the leaders instigate the majority community against the minority only to get votes. Separation of state and religion is the only way for a true democracy to exist. If Sudan can do it, these two should as well.
