Yoshihide Suga elected as Japan’s new prime minister

Japan’s Parliament has formally elected Yoshihide Suga as PM. Suga had been chosen as leader of the ruling party on Monday, after Shinzo Abe resigned because of ill health. Suga has stressed his background as a farmer’s son in promising to serve the interests of ordinary people and rural communities. He added that his top priorities will be fighting the coronavirus and turning around the economy.
