Bill de Blasio furloughs himself and staff to ease budget crisis

NYC mayor Bill de Blasio has announced that everyone in his office, including himself, will be furloughed for one week without pay beginning 1 Oct. to close a budget shortfall created by the pandemic. The coronavirus outbreak has forced a $7B cut to the city’s annual budget. The furloughs, de Blasio said, will save only about $1M but will serve as a symbol in negotiations with labor unions.

“"We have to make tough choices to move this city forward and keep our budget balanced," de Blasio told reporters. “... Billionaire takes a week off unpaid and that’s a “tough choice”??? The people left in NYC are probably so relieved that for at least one week the mayor won’t be doing anything to screw them over. NYC, you voted for this.
