Covid-19 forces postponement of Rio carnival for first time in 108 years

The world-famous Rio de Janeiro carnival festival for 2021 has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Rio’s League of Samba Schools said the pandemic has made it impossible to safely hold the parades, which is a huge cultural event. This is the first time the carnival has been delayed in 108 years. The last time it happened was in 1912, when Brazil’s foreign minister died.
