Woman to lead Rochester police

The city of Rochester, N.Y., appointed its first female police chief Saturday. Mayor Lovely Warren announced the appointment of Cynthia Herriott-Sullivan as interim chief of police. Herriott-Sullivan takes the post after former Chief La’Ron D. Singletary resigned amid allegations of a cover up in the death of Daniel Prude. Herriott-Sullivan is a Rochester native, having joined the RPD in 1985.

Wootoo Diversity hire isn't fair practice though. Affirmative action is highly discriminatory and favours less qualified/competent people simply because of their race/gender/ethnicity. It is the very opposite of meritocracy.

I hope she’s more successful than the last Rochester Police Chief. Diversity and fair hiring practices are essential and we need to continue those practices, but they are not systemic reform. Both neocon and neolib politicians have been known to cynically hire BIPOC as cover for claims of institutional racism without reforming policies built on white supremacy. Dr. Cornel West said it best recently: “We've tried black faces in high places. Too often our black politicians, professional class, middle class become too accommodated to the capitalist economy, too accommodated to a militarized nation-state, too accommodated to the market-driven culture of celebrities, status, power, fame, all that superficial stuff that means so much to so many fellow citizens.” https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2020/05/29/cornel_west_america_is_a_failed_social_experiment_neoliberal_wing_of_democratic_party_must_be_fought.html

That’s wonderful but it has nothing to do with police shootings. The shootings will continue until people, of all colors, learn that you don’t fight the police or resist arrest. I don’t think there is one case out there in which someone didn’t think they should go to jail, fought or resisted and it changed the arresting officers mind.
