Chicago PD making changes in hopes of ending record crime under present leaders

Chicago’s police superintendent announced Friday that all facets of the department — from patrol officers to executive staff — will be more engaged with the community in an effort to build trust and drive down record crime rates experienced under democrat leadership. The new Community Policing Strategy Plan also includes the creation of a police athletic and arts league to engage the city’s youth.

Only time will tell if this will work, but I'm hopeful as community policing is the only viable way forward. Police culture in America has to change. Cops will be safer and communities will feel protected if the policies and procedures focus on us all being in this together. Threat, confrontation and overwhelming force as a standard response have failed.

I hope it succeeds. We know that traditional policing, the Chicago way, isn’t effective at reducing crime and that corruption was rampant. I’m all for trying new approaches and I’ve seen community policing work very well in my home town. Something has to change. Can’t do much harm to try it at this point.
