California signs law that will require prisoners to be housed by gender identity

The law says officers must ask inmates privately during the intake process if they identify as transgender, nonbinary or intersex. Those inmates can then request placement in a facility that houses either men or women. The CDCR cannot deny requests solely because of inmates’ anatomy, sexual orientation or ’a factor present’. They may deny based on security but the inmate must be able to object.

What California, and all other states, should actually be doing, is to ensure that the amount of rapes that take place in prisons come down. A straight man is raped by a straight man. How are prison authorities going to tackle this? All those jokes revolving around bending in order to pick up the soap while in the shower are sickening, to say the least, and prison officials seem to do nothing to prevent such happenings.
