Indonesian President Jokowi’s independent approach draws mixed reactions

In 2014, Joko Widodo was elected president of Indonesia following a campaign similar to Obama’s 2008 run for the White House. But since taking office, Jokowi (as he is widely known) has fallen short of the high expectations. Most recently, he proposed an expensive plan to move the country’s capital. A Financial Times journalist has written a book assessing his time in office.

I remember having read about how Jokowi was being billed as someone who had it in him to question China's increasingly imperialistic ambitions in the South China Sea. In fact, scholars had also speculated that he could craft a solid relationship with nations like India Japan and Australia in order to try and effectively counter China's rising ambitions, which were detrimental to peace in the area. However, with him proving ineffective in office, expectations have fallen flat, as has been mentioned in the summary, too.
