Al Qaeda could regroup in Afghanistan in 2 years, Pentagon warns

An extremist group like Al Qaeda may be able to regenerate in Afghanistan and pose a threat to the U.S. homeland within two years of the American military’s withdrawal from the country, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Thursday. At a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing, Austin rated the likelihood of a regeneration of Al Qaeda or the IS in Afghanistan as ’medium.’

Therein lies the catch. If we stay we are perpetuating an endless and unpopular war that sees the area destabalized while the US sends troops, supplies, and money into a shredder. If we leave then the power vacuum will be filled by the same kind of people who have been filling it since the 70’s and we will no doubt have an excuse to come back like we always have.
