San Diego Unified School District changes grading system to ’combat racism’

Students will no longer be graded based on a yearly average, or on how late they turn in assignments. Those are just some of the major grading changes approved this week by California’s second-largest school district. Disproportionate failure rates amongst students of color lead board members to say the changes are part of a larger effort to combat racism.

Any time they say "Combat Racism", "Help the poor" or create "Equity" what they mean is implement communist policies to seize the means of production and centralize power into the hands of those worthy to have it, meaning themselves. By any means necessary. Be very skeptical of anyone that needs to announce all their good works. It generally is a smokescreen and not their real agenda.

Am I reading this right? They’re marking based on “mastery of material”... ISNT THAT WHAT GRADES MEASURE. How are grades racist you can literally be a blue person with one eye and ace a physics test BECAUSE RACE ISNT ACCOUNTED FOR IN YOUR ANSWERS. How well you know the material is tho

Personally, I am not sure how allowing students to turn in work late without penalty, etc is supposed to make anything better for students in the long run. I mean are these kids going to take that rationale to their place of employment after they leave school? Of course, this overt connection of poor student behavior to race, beyond seeming a bit racist itself, just convolutes matters even more so.

Imagine needing to lowering the bar to help non-white students. Talk about insulting, not to mention racist.

Why don’t they just get rid of D’s and F’s? That way no one can fail no matter how bad they do. Just think how everyone’s self-esteem will sore knowing no matter how low the effort they have to pass the student. Also; everything’s is equal with no bias towards race. Besides it’s not like those kids are going to grow up and be anything useful to society. They will get their gender studies degree and go to work at Starbucks. Yes, this was sarcasm...

It sounds like a good idea but don't say its to combat racism

Yes letting people pass without learning, that's already being done to Intercity chikdren. Let's widen that school to prison pipeline. That's truly progressive. VALEDICTORIAN FLUNKS GRADUATION TEST https://www.heartland.org/news-opinion/news/valedictorian-flunks-graduation-test?source=policybot

In Critical Race Theory there is the concept of standpoint epistomolgy, i.e. truth is relative to your lived experience. They go on to use that to rationalize identity politics. Grades based on individual "mastery" seems like the same dumb idea to me. Without an objective standard, the grades are basically meaningless. Give everyone an A and that fixes everything -- not.

So claiming black students can't turn things in on time, is not a racist stereotype? Trying claiming that at work. Tell your boss, your workers need more time because they are black. Let me know how that turns out. If they told a kid of mine or realtive that, i would rightfully be offended.

What in the hell does changing your archaic broken system have to do with racism? Because black kids are the only ones who turn in homework late?

I agree that the mastering part is most important to set the correct grade. I do not agree with disregarding order in class and late turn ins. It's part of school to learn how to behave in the real world.

They put it out there like grades are racist. Maybe there are cultural factors involved rather than racial factors in why certain kids are failing. A house that has two parents are more likely to succeed than one with only one parent. What are the kids exposed to and are taught at home? These things and more will hurt or help a kid in school. How are they going to measure 'mastery? That's what I want to know. I was never fond of homework so I think it's a good idea to downplay it. Kids should not be 'working' when they are not at home. Late work should be penalized as normal.

"teachers can no longer consider non-material factors when grading. Things like turning work in on time and classroom behavior." So...they think that non-white people inherently can't turn things in on time and can't behave themselves in the classroom. I think there's a word for that...

Yes, that's a winner right there! Combat racism by holding them to a lower standard. Nothing says equality like lowering standards. Everyone gets a trophy 🏆 Remember now, ""poor kids can be just as smart as white kid"" -Joe Biden So long as you lower the standards to the point that you basically do''t have any.
