Ultraconservative Raisi elected Iran president as rivals concede

Ultraconservative Ebrahim Raisi has won Iran’s presidential election as his rivals conceded even before official results were announced. Raisi, 60, takes over from Hassan Rouhani in August as Iran seeks to salvage its tattered nuclear deal with major powers and free itself from punishing US sanctions that have driven a sharp economic downturn. Raisi is seen as close to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Who cares. The Ayatollahs are the ones in charge. This election is about as consequential as elections in Communist China.

This wasn’t a fair election. The Iranian people want democracy and not insane islamic theocrats running their country.
