Nasa Osiris-Rex mission lands on asteroid Bennu, to collect dust sample

NASA’s Osiris-Rex spacecraft has successfully landed on asteroid Bennu. The spacecraft, which dodged huge boulders before landing on the surface of the asteroid, will collect samples of the asteroid’s dust and return to Earth for scientists to analyze it. In this incredibly complex mission, scientists say the spacecraft did everything that it was supposed to do, so far.

This is an amazing and fascinating story about how incredibly smart our scientists and the human race for that matter are. From the invention of wheel to landing a spacecraft on a 4 billion year old asteroid traveling at 60 thousand MPH in the span of 6-8 thousand years which is a spec in the history of earth. What’s almost as amazing is that this isn’t the #1 news story. Political and pop culture news dominate our attention. I’m as guilty as anyone else when it comes to that. But wouldn’t it be nice if our society, especially our younger people would hear this story and understand the incredible task that we have accomplished. Like in the 60’s when everyone gathered around a TV and watched proudly our heroic astronauts go into space setting an example of we can do anything. Just saying.

I'm a major fan of space exploration, BUT couldn't we invest the huge amounts of money, spent to get what is essentially space rocks, on the major problems here ON earth?
