California to pay off unpaid rent accrued during coronavirus pandemic

California will pay off all the past-due rent accumulated by residents during the coronavirus pandemic, said Gov. Newsom. The state has about $5.2B from federal aid packages approved by Congress to pay off people’s rent, which should be enough to cover, said a senior counselor to Newsom. What’s unclear is whether California will continue to ban evictions for unpaid rent beyond June 30.

Yet another reason to leave Commiefornia. No wait...at the least the commies attempt to share labor, this proposal is just hand outs to lazy people for the most part. It's Welfarefornia or Handoutfornia...somebody come up with something catchy.

So federal tax dollars will now go towards paying for the past due rent of irresponsible people in California.

The joke's on those who saved for years for such a situation and scrounged for money, depleting their savings for months. Turns out, they could have saved a LOT of money if they just didn't pay. At least the landlords (Newsom's rich buddies, maybe?) get to make bank. I guess more taxes will take care of it. Do convenience store shoplifters pay tax? At any rate, I do believe that ALL of those Newsom's F'ed job-wise should all be paid back for their economic loss, from the bank accounts of the politicians, specifically Newsom.

So effectively they're rewarding the people who chose not to pay rent during the pandemic, while the renters who deprived themselves of other things during the pandemic to pay their rent get nothing?

Newsom, the CLOWN has been scrambling to try and prevent his inevitable removal from the governor's office. These DEMOCRAP DICTATORS on the West Coast of the USA all did their best to destroy the lives of millions of people with their Forced Lockdown orders. All THREE of these DEMOCRAP SCUMBAGS should be forcibly removed!

Hey we can barely pay for water and electricity for our state... we can barely take care of the homeless... but your rent! We got you! 😎

I mean with good governing they have a surplus... So it makes sense to actually help people.

Haha. Commiefornia can't pay their rent. Lmfao. Get to work you l@zy @sses! Although what would I expect from the state that lives in constant fear and is convinced they are oppressed from every agency in the government, but still thinks we need more way more government.🤦🏽‍♂️ These people really think the ones causing all the problems are also the only solution. Wow

Ah yes, an acquaintance of mine has such a small bank balance, drives a lambo but bought all his stock on account and hasn't paid his rent in months. Me who buys all his stock COD and used my savings to pay rent will get nothing. Sure lefties sooo fair.

Dude... As much as this seems great on a surface level, this is one of the many short sited policies that will come back to bite.

I detest this. I know personally of many people who still worked and claimed they didn't. Is their fraud going to be paid? I worked my ass off to the point I had an emergency fund and a home downpayment, am I going to see any of this money or is it just going to keep coming from my pocket. There are a ton of jobs for those who are looking but unfortunately because the government keeps sending out checks too many people are content to just stay home and collect free money and now have their rent paid.

How does Cali even have the means to accomplish this? I'm empathetic to those people who have struggled during Covid, but what exactly is the criteria for this rent relief? Could someone - in theory - just not have paid their rent for the past 18 months, and just skate? That seems egregious to me. It's going to make those people who did their best to come up with rent every month, really upset to find out that they could have just said "F it!" and freeloaded for the past year and a half.

Hopefully this helps many families stay in a home. I dont care for alot of california politics, usually extreme and crazy. But if it will keep families together and in a home, good for california. The pandemic caused alot of folks to lose all across the country.

conservatives looking dumb as fuck in the comments finding ways to NOT care about people. yes there are people that spent there hard earned money on rent that wont get reimbursed for it, but what about the people that literally couldnt pay rent? like i dont get why you have such a hatred toward anything left even when its helping poor people who cant afford rent

Don’t you just love how all these people come to our country and want us to pay for all their stuff...but hey at least we aren’t “racist” right.

Paying off people's rent ISN'T going to save him from getting recalled. Newsome is no good for California and being the nephew of pelosi... Well it explains alot. California needs someone that recognizes that we are not san Francisco. There are more lower middle class and poor in California then they want to realize and that the cost of living is insane. Making it almost impossible for anyone to start a living anywhere in cali.

Saw that coming. Did they really think ppl could repay back rent for over a year in one of the most expensive states to live in which is also economically closed down? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out.
