US COVID-19 deaths projected to hit 500,000 by February

As per the latest estimate by the University of Washington’s IHME, the death toll from COVID-19 in the country could exceed 500K by February. The warning comes as coronavirus cases have hit a record daily high as states grapple with a renewed wave of infections. 83,010 new cases were reported on Friday. Researchers added that wearing masks could significantly lower the death rate.

Okay their saying that the deaths could more than double. Occam’s razor would suggest that the number of infections doubled. There is 100 days until February there is roughly 8.5 million US cases. If we use the record breaking number from Friday you get 8,301,000 new infections by February. Current death toll is 224k. So if we assume the new record for everyday until February. We roughly double the cases and assuming we haven’t gotten any better at handling this the deaths roughly double. That puts us at 450k deaths. So to get to 500k deaths we would have to have record-breaking daily infections and no improvement in treatment and no vaccine. Right?
