Turkey condemns French disrespectful caricature featuring its president

Top Turkish officials condemned a caricature disrespecting President Tayyip Erdogan in the French humorous weekly Charlie Hebdo on Wednesday, calling it a ’disgusting effort’ to ’spread its cultural racism and hatred’. The cartoon on the cover page of Charlie Hebdo, pictured Erdogan wearing a white T-shirt in underpants, holding a canned drink along with a woman wearing an Islamic hijab.

Those people really get their panties in a twist over cartoons, don't they? Imagine how they are at dealing with real-world problems.

“And on Wednesday, Egypt's president Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi also weighed into the debate, saying freedom of expression should stop if it offended more than 1.5 billion people.” Yeah, no. Freedom of speech doesn’t end where someone’s hurt feelings begin. People depict Jesus in very disrespectful ways all of the time in pop culture. A great many Christians get up in arms when it happens but they still don’t get to dictate free speech.

Muslim nations are just going to have to live with criticism just like dictator nations like China and North Korea and Iran! This is a new transparent world that has little tolerance for intolerance and abuse, and it doesn’t matter whether that abuse comes from a non- secular or secular source, nothing is protected on the world stage! Not anymore!

“I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it.” - Voltaire Someone needs to explain to the Turkish “President” that this is what free speech is. The same with anyone who thinks a caricature should be banned because it offends 1.5 billion people. Okay, so? You may not like it but if you’re to have the right to speak your mind then you have to accept others saying things and expressing themselves in ways you don’t agree with.

Turkey needs to chill. Cartoons and things like this only have as much power as you give them. Erdogan should just commission some surrender frog memes. Or he could take the healthy route and ignore it. But I'm guessing somebody who made America step aside for his invasion of syria won't just live and let live.

You wish this were about racism, Turkey. You wish. This is a problem with ideas. And pretending memes == genes has worked for a while, but the grift is wearing thin in the west. Your ideas aren't your race. Your culture is not your race.

I barely used less French products , but now onwards use only French products. White/black ,Democratic / Republic , freedom of speech at top.

I love how Turkey can do ethnic cleansing on one day, and then they can claim to be victims of racism on the next... without everyone bursting out with laughter. It's definately a top tier superpower Or a great south park episode at the least...

Well maybe if Turkey had been stronger in condemning the beheading of the French teacher in the name is Islam, instead of showing such scorn over Macron's response to the beheading, then there would be less to mock and criticise about Erdoğan.

This just proves the double standard of the whole Muslim culture. France draws cartoons. Everyone loses their mind Meanwhile, China, prosecutes and puts muslims in re-education camps, demolishes mosks and burns Korans that had not give through Chinese editorial censorship. Muslim countries, poeple and leaders don't say anything.

Nah. The French people hate him too. Don’t worry about it. Speaking of which are there still yellow vest boyos?

This cartoon was so effective because it describes Erdogan perfectly. It also describes perfectly the average Muslim man and his attitude toward women! They are just Allah’s gift to Muslim men to use and abuse as they see fit! That is how they structure their legal system and civil rights! In Muslim countries when a woman gets raped they throw HER in jail, not the man! Not a good country for girls or women!
