It's kind of the laws of physics, harder is harder to scratch but easier to shatter, more flexible is easier to scratch harder to shatter. Of course companies like corning try to acheive an optimum balance of both. The science behind it is very interesting and basically they add impurities or heat and cool different ways to manipulate the crystalline structure of the glass.
