UK fines Marriott Hotels £18.4 million for major data breach

The United Kingdom’s Information Commissioner’s Office has fined the Marriott Hotels chain £18.4 million ($23.8 million) for a major data breach in a cyberattack that started in 2014 and continued until 2018 when it was detected. It affected up to 339 million guests, including 7 million UK guest records. The watchdog said Marriott failed to put safeguards in place but acknowledged it had improved.
