Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis has drafted an ’anti-mob’ legislation to expand the already controversial ’Stand Your Ground’ laws. Under the new law, citizens will not face criminal charges if they shoot at looters even if they kill them. The proposed law specifically allows force against those looting, which the draft defines as ’burglary’, within 500 feet of a ’violent or disorderly assembly.’
I'm all for defending your life against an attacker, but I'm sorry property is not worth killing for. They instead should look at how to optimize insurance to help businesses that have been looted, or offer government financial assistance. Man this is so dangerous. Best case you kill someone stealing a TV, worse case you escalate the situation and put more people in harm. What if you shoot a looter and police mistake you for a potential threat? Now they have to focus attention on you as well. The goal should be descelation not vigilanty justice.
A great way to discourage looting, but may backfire. I’m for the stand your ground law, and this sounds good on the surface, but can be executed poorly. Be. Careful.
