Major breakthrough needed to avert no-deal Brexit, says Irish minister

Ireland’s foreign minister has said that the negotiations with Britain on fishing rights were ’not in a good place’. ’If there is not a major breakthrough over the next week to 10 days then I think we really are in trouble and the focus will shift to preparing for a no-trade deal,’ Simon Coveney added. Outstanding issues include the level of access to UK waters provided to EU fishing fleets.

"The level of access to UK fishing waters to EU fishing fleets" should be zero until the UK says otherwise.

The EU wants 100% access to UK fishing waters and to sell the catch back to the UK, preventing the British from fishing in their own waters, hence why there is a breakdown in talks. The EU wants a hard brexit for the same reasons as brexiteers do, but they see opposite outcomes from a hard brexit.
