Peru chooses 3rd President in a week amid protests

Peru’s Congress has elected a new interim president, making him the 3rd holder of the office within a week. Francisco Sagasti, 76, will be president until the elections in April. The first president was impeached over bribery allegations, which sparked protests. His successor was Manuel Merino, who resigned after violent crackdowns on protests, and the refusal by many to accept his leadership.

The new president is moderate left. Some of my family might vote for his party in the upcoming elections in April and while we disagree on some topics we agree on many others with this new president. Nevertheless, we don’t want him to implement the policies we like. He is supposed to be a neutral president, keeping the executive branch allive, managing covid, investigating corruption and human rights violations of former president for 6 days Merino and delivering fair elections in April. Who ever gets elected in April should be the one making big decisions as this Parlament has lost all confidence from the people. That’s what I want and that’s what most people want. If he doesn’t comply with this amd tries to push party politics on topics other than those mentioned, he will be thrown out by the people.
