Arecibo Observatory’s radio telescope to be decommissioned due to damage

The Arecibo radio telescope has been decided to be decommissioned. The decision follows assessment of damage that a detached suspension cable caused soon after a tropical storm in August. The US National Science Foundation (NSF), who manages the facility with University of Central Florida, says that any attempts to repair the observatory would be too dangerous for those involved.

Pretty sad, this was a major science installation in Puerto Rico, and very iconic. I was there just a few years ago, it is enormous.

Noooo T.T I was already sad when I saw the first reports of the damage but back than I thought it would surely be repaired... This monumental piece of modern science that up to the moment of damage kept delivering interesting data. While there are newer and even bigger telescopes now, the loss will be felt by the whole field of radio astronomy.
