Google’s Messaging app now has RCS, company working on end-to-end encryption

Google has announced that rich communications services, or RCS, for Android Messaging app is now globally available. RCS features include improved video and photo quality, seeing when chats are read, sending and receiving messages over Wi-Fi, etc. The company also announced that it is working on end-to-end encryption for the app and will start rolling out to beta testers this month.

So there's no E2E yet but they release it as a competitor to iMessages? The only upside is free messaging but no more secure than SMS.
