US jobless claims hit 5-week high as record Covid-19 cases cause rise in layoffs

The US citizens who applied for state unemployment benefits in Nov rose for a second consecutive week to a five-week high, indicating a record rise in Covid-19 cases has put brakes on hiring and could impact economic recovery. Initial jobless claims increased by a seasonally adjusted 30,000 to 778,000 in seven days ended Nov. 21. Economists had forecasted a initial jobless claims to total 720,000.
