A new rule, published by the Justice Department, will allow the use of different methods of federal execution as permitted by states, including firing squads and electrocution. The rule will be effective from December 24th.
So many studies have shown that excecution is not a deterrent. It has also been shown that excecutions are more expensive than life sentences. Excecutions are not about justice, they are about vengeance. That being said, since lethal injections are not administered by trained health workers for obvious reasons, they can frequently go wrong. Firing squads might actually be more humane than lethal injection. But the practice of excecuting people is by itself barbaric. A number of excecuted inmates have been posthumously exonerated due to advances in evidence gathering technology. The risk of killing the innocent is too high.
