Brazil’s Amazon deforestation rate hits 12-year high under Bolsonaro

Brazil’s Amazon rainforest suffered its worst assault in 12 years as it lost 11,088 square kilometers due to deforestation between August 2019 and July 2020. Data from Brazil’s space research agency showed a 9.5% annual increase in the Amazon’s deforestation. This comes after President Jair Bolsonaro urged more commercial farming and mining in the Amazon saying it would help ’fight poverty.’
