US students falling behind in math amid Covid-19 school shutdowns, study finds

A nationwide test carried out by non-profit NWEA, formerly known as Northwest Evaluation Association, suggests the coronavirus-driven shift to online learning has had little impact on children’s reading growth but had impacted their skills in math. The data analysis from nearly 4.4 million American students from Grade 3 to Grade 8 is one of the first big studies of Covid-19’s impact on learning.

As a teacher I can tell you that online only students have been falling behind in every subject. I expect many students will have to repeat the first semester.

Sure. Blame the coof coof for this, and not Common Core. Or the fact that public schools have placed education as a secondary priority.

Social justice bull is not helping either. The students are shown not to contract the virus as easily and should be in the class room. If the Teacher needs to suit up or do class by remote then do it.

Democrats lied about keeping schools closed, because of scare mongering. Now they change the story saying they never did that. There have been no problems in school Canada opened without lowering class size younger kids with out masks, zero outbreaks or problems

In some fashion, I think many grades should be repeated. The US Educational system passes students who shouldn't go to the next grade. Allowing these marginal students as well as good students move on when, this online learning is a joke at best is hurtful to many childrens educational needs.

It's not just the virus that is making kids behind in math. We've been lagging behind nearly the entire Western world in math and science skills. Kids are fed propaganda, and barely get the minimum of education that I got when I was in school in the 60's. Did you know you could take driving lessons, and lessons on how to count back change, and balance your checkbook in the 60's? Over the decades, they have cut the scholastic budget to the point where many schools may not have music, sports, or art moving forward. Why is this bad? Children ARE OUR FUTURE.

Well, it is only reasonable to give everyone ever so slightly above average marks and congratulate everyone with great achievement of total equality. The pandemic has very little to do with this. This is a long ride downhill and it ain't stopping....

Considering how awful our public schools are, this is terrible. Maybe if we had competent governing bodies who would actually fund our public schools, this wouldn't be such a bad thing. At least that monster DeVos is on her way out.

I don't want to hear it. All of us conservatives told you this would happen. When we did, we were called heartless monsters that wanted to kill grandma. Now grandma is still dead and the kids are all hurt too. Great job everyone. This is why being a nation of p@##ys isn't a good idea.

Kinda makes you wish this economy would allow for both parents to work a reasonable shift and have time to attend to their children's educational needs.

The ones suffering most are those in special education programs which require much more direct and hands on teaching. When you cannot accommodate those needs those kids will fall further and further behind.

More infuriating crap. So my son was making a 28, seriously a 28 in math ( out of a 100) when they shut down for Covid. The following year they started off in virtual learning. We found out that the school passed him and showed his official math grade as a 78 in math, absolutely no additional work done by him. I asked how he could do the next years work if he couldn’t / wouldn’t do pre Covid math and they said ‘it’s not right that he fail when we shut down school’ I said so it’s right to pass him off to a world in which he didn’t have to do the work and it looks like he passed ? Response was Shrugged shoulders . Now that he’s 16 he can legally quit school, which he has done despite our begging the state to help us stop him. Now he’s got a part time job and I’m sorry to say for both him and the taxpayer headed toward being a government dependant and another democrat voter I’m telling you guys this country is done !
