The iconic Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico has completely collapsed as engineers feared. The telescope’s 900-ton receiver platform fell onto the reflector dish over 400 feet below. It had played a big role in astronomical discoveries for over five decades. In August, an auxiliary cable snapped, which caused a long gash on reflector dish and damaged the receiver platform that hung above it.
You had a good long run, my dear friend. You'll never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Buddy.
I'd say the builders got their money out of that investment!! It's a shame it broke, but it was pretty old.
Our government at work ladies and gentlemen
Reminds me of a battlefield map
Rest in Pieces
This is one of the top 5 worst things to happen in 2020.
If they knew it was going to fall is there some reason not to bring the 900-TON receiver down safely?
Hope they got it on video. At least James Bond used it to take out the Goldeneye satellite first.
R.I.P. It was so beautiful and such an important piece of science and technology
R.I.P
I hope they atleast used it while it was damaged. Would probly have been some of the coolest pictures of space.
GoldenEye anyone?
That really sucks. I hope they try to fix it
The best outcome for a difficult demolition. Glad nobody was hurt.
Does this mean we’re not going to be able to watch The Big Bang Theory in Hi-Def ? Man, we can’t catch a break this year.
