President Trump reiterates demand to repeal Section 230 after GOP pushback

President Donald Trump reiterated his demands for members of the GOP to include the repeal of a legal protection for tech companies in a must-pass defense policy bill. Many in the Republican Party have pushed back on tying the two issues together. Taking to Twitter, the President acknowledged the fact that some Republicans have criticized his proposal, but said repealing Section 230 is a ’MUST’.

I wonder if Trump understands what he is saying because getting rid of section 230 is an invitation for mass censorship and suppressing opinions. While Facebook, Twitter, and youtube may abuse this privilege, it will have implications for every platform, big or small. It will expose them to the cancel culture mob and effectively sterilize the digital town square. What's needed is either a SCOTUS ruling to define free speech boundaries better online or reforms that impose constitutional standards. That way, if a social media platform wishes to engage in censorship beyond those limitations, they will have to forego the protections afforded by section 230 and categories themselves as a crowdsourced publication and reserve the right to curate content.
